The project site is located on the south side of Jamestown Island, where the undisturbed, rolling countryside meets the bay. The site has vast panoramic views of this engagement. The unique setting became an important aspect of the design of the house.
Originally, a single story dwelling roughly twenty-four feet wide by forty-six feet long with a full sub basement level, was situated on the property. We decided to work with the existing envelope and incorporate a second level into the design. We reconfigured the main floor common areas, bedrooms and bathrooms and inserted a garden porch. The new second floor houses a bedroom, bathroom and an outdoor covered deck space as an extension of the garden and outdoor experience. The outdoor deck space accentuates the panoramic vistas of the land and sea with large horizontal openings similar to those of the past ocean liners.
